Unapologetic: Street Art as Activism and Liberation
Tuesday, September 23 :: 4-5:50pm
@ UMBC CIRCA

Johanna Toruño is the founder of The Unapologetic Street Series, a street art series that is exhibited at public spaces, such as walls, utility posts, and mailboxes. Her bold imagery and statements, often adorned in lush florals, celebrate queer, working class, and immigrant communities. Through her work, Toruño challenges social norms and centers messages of self-reflection and self-acceptance. Using a soft aesthetic with colors that remind her of home, Toruño brings storytelling and a chance for her audience to re-learn and decolonize their own self to accessible spaces. Her political and social messages highlight topics of reimagining norms, and the joy of holding space for collective liberation. Johanna is a TED speaker and lecturer at Universities like Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, and others. Johanna’s work has been featured in The New York Times, Teen Vogue, NPR, Nylon, and more. Johanna lives and works in Los Angeles with her partner and 2 dogs. If she’s not wheat pasting, she’s cooking.

This event is part of the Fall 2025 Humanities Forum, co-sponsored by CIRCA, the Dresher Center for the Humanities; the Department of Gender, Women’s, + Sexuality Studies; the Latin American Feminisms Faculty Working Group; the Latin American Studies Minor;  the Latinx and Hispanic Faculty Association; The Mosaic: Center for Cultural Diversity; and the Orser Center for Public Humanities.

Sacred Ground | Opening Reception + Artist Talk
Wednesday, September 24 :: 5-8pm
@ Baltimore Unity Hall

Sacred Ground Opening Reception & Artist Talk

Come join us at Baltimore Unity Hall for the opening reception of our latest exhibition, Sacred Ground: Spirit, Memory, and Meaning in Baltimore.

Baltimore Unity Hall is located at a unique intersection of faith and tradition, surrounded by churches, synagogues, mosques, masonic lodges, and generations of spiritual history. This is an open call for artists, historians, faith leaders, and storytellers to share how spirit moves through this city, how sacred space is held, and what memory and meaning look like in your communities.

As we continue to grow, let us always remember we are not starting from scratch. We are building on the foundation of those who came before us, guided by their hopes, struggles, and dreams. And in doing so, we are making space for future generations to remember, too.

Look out for selected artists to be announced on our Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/baltimoreunityhall/

Swimming Pool – Katie Pumphrey | Artist Talk + Swim Stories
Wednesday, September 24 :: 76:30-8pm
@ Creative Alliance

Swimming Pool is a solo exhibition by Baltimore based interdisciplinary artist and ultramarathon open water swimmer, Katie Pumphrey. Swimming Pool features all new paintings and a site-specific installation.

Deeply connected to her experiences in the water, Pumphrey explores the repetition of our anxieties and fears, along with the humor we call on to swim through it all. Her work explores how our imagination plays tricks on us, especially when stress is high and the journey is far.

Pumphrey’s paintings reference the compositions of historical paintings through playful colors and images of swimmers and marine life. Her engagement with paintings like Rubens ‘ “Three Graces” and Copley’s “Watson and the Shark” as cultural references takes classical bodies and submerges them in contemporary waters of fear and anxiety. A declaration that our deepest fears and anxieties can become our most profound teachers.

Echoed in the repetition of a swimmer’s hands and the lurking suggestion of sea monsters, this call and response with history combines these tensions, and dives into the connectedness between human instincts and play.

Through an opening reception paired with playful performances, and artist talks that center dialogue over monologue, as well as community partnerships, Pumphrey creates community where connection becomes a shared experience, and art serves as a necessity.

September 5, 6-9 pm: Exhibition Opening and party

September 24, 6:30-8 pm: Artist Talk and Swim Stories

TBA: Ticket Dinner

Artist Bio

Katie Pumphrey (b.1987) is an American interdisciplinary artist and ultramarathon open water swimmer. Pulling from her experiences in the water, her paintings, sculptures, and installations use abstraction and imagery to investigate our anxieties, fears, and how our imagination plays tricks on us. Incorporating a bit of humor, Pumphrey explores these tensions and the connectedness between human instincts and play. Pumphrey has a Bachelors of Fine Art in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her works have been exhibited in galleries across the United States, including solo exhibitions in Baltimore, MD, Washington, DC, Alexandria, VA, and Key West, FL. She has participated in artist residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Studios of Key West, Gallery Four, as well as the Creative Alliance in Baltimore, where she was a resident artist from 2011-2014. On June 25th, 2024, Katie Pumphrey became the first person to complete the “Bay to Baltimore” swim, a 24 mile swim from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

Pumphrey’s history-making Bay to Baltimore swim in support and celebration for the decades-long clean up efforts to make the Baltimore Harbor swimmable and a safe recreational resource for the city. Pumphrey continues to be involved in these efforts, recently founding the nonprofit Baltimore Open Water Swimmers (BOWS), and speaking at the Swimmable Cities Summit, in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Pumphrey recently joined as a signatory to the Swimmable Cities Charter, and now serves as a Swimmable Cities Ambassador. Other notable swims include three English Channel swims (2015, 2022, 2025), as well as around the island of Manhattan (2017) and the Catalina Channel (2018, 2024)— those three swims make up the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. Pumphrey was the 194th person (73rd woman) in the world to achieve that honor. Her work as an artist is deeply connected to her experiences as an athlete, as is her community outreach and advocacy. Pumphrey lives and works in Baltimore City, MD.

Camila De Ilhéus, Newsletter

In Between the Lines Curated by Liz Faust | Closing Celebration
Friday, September 26 :: 7pm
@ Baltimore City Crit Club

We’re also thrilled to announce our next exhibition, curated by Baltimore curator Liz Faust. Liz is one of the most active voices in our scene, with a curatorial practice that has spanned multiple venues, including her new tenure as Director of Exhibitions at Goucher College. Many of you will know her from exhibitions here in Baltimore and beyond. Here is a statement Liz has provided as an introduction to the artists we’ll be presenting in September:

In Between the Lines unites the poetic photographs of Camila De Ilhéus with the vibrant, symbolic paintings of Chidinma Dureke. Together, they explore what it means to live between places, languages, and identities. From De Ilhéus’ intimate images layered with handwritten verse to Dureke’s dreamlike botanicals and liminal spaces, the exhibition invites viewers into the beauty, ache, and resilience of the in-between.

Brush Mural Fest 2025
Saturday, September 27 :: 12-3pm
@ Graffiti Alley/Motor House

BRUSH Mural Fest (BRUSH) returns for its third year, showcasing 12 Baltimore-based artists in the city’s Station North Arts District. Presented by The Robert W. Deutsch Foundation, BRUSH Mural Fest 2025 will feature six permanent, 200 square foot murals to be installed side by side along the south wall of the I-83 underpass on North Ave. The area, formerly known as “The Underline,” will receive some well-deserved revitalization and vibrance as this group of artists transform walls into windows of possibility through their exploration of the theme “Re-Imagination.”

“We cannot think of a more fitting location to explore and exemplify this year’s theme,’” said Mural Fest co-founder and Co-Executive Director, Jaz Erenberg. “With ‘Re-Imagination,’ this year’s festival challenges muralists, audiences, and communities to think beyond boundaries, re-envision familiar narratives, and boldly reshape the visual language of Baltimore. Together, we’ll explore what it means to reclaim space, reshape identity, and reimagine what’s possible—one mural at a time.”

Mirroring last year’s format, selected professional muralists (PROs) will be paired off with one of this year’s emerging artists (Rising Stars) and each artists duo will have two weeks to complete their mural in time for the Festival Celebration Day on Saturday, September 27, 2025. Celebration Day festivities will be held in Graffiti Alley behind Motor House from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm and will feature live entertainment, free community spray painting, local food vendors, as well as two BRUSH Organizer led ‘Mural Tours’ to the the nearby mural site for community members to view the completed artworks of this year’s festival.

In the weeks leading up to celebration day, there will be multiple opportunities for the public to engage with this year’s selected artists as well as the greater Brush Mural Fest community including a Community Paint Day facilitated by Empact Art during the Bromo Art Walk on Thursday, September 11th and an Artists Happy Hour on Friday, September 12th at the Royal Blue. Members of the public are also encouraged to visit the mural site starting Saturday, September 13th to check out the mural progression and see our artists in action as they bring their visions to life.

All events are free and open to the public. Learn more about BRUSH by visiting www.brushmuralfest.com.

Opening Weekend Boshell Lecture: Preserving the Souls of Animals
Saturday, September 27 :: 3-4:40pm
@ The Walters Art Museum

Ancient Egyptians mummified animals for many reasons, including to preserve cherished pets after death, to offer food to the deceased in tombs, and so their souls could deliver messages to the gods. Today, taxidermists preserve animals for a variety of other purposes, including educational and artistic uses. Join us for this special lecture during the opening weekend of Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt as we connect modern-day practices with ancient ones.

Listen to a presentation on current practices in animal preservation by Divya Anantharaman, artist and taxidermist, and learn about the unique characteristics of living animals that many seek to highlight and preserve from Colby Bieschke, Manager of Nature Camps and Summer Camp Director at Irvine Nature Center. Following the presentations, audience members can submit questions for a public Q&A moderated by Lisa Anderson-Zhu, Curator of Ancient Mediterranean Art and Curator of Provenance. Stay a little longer for a public reception featuring Egyptian street food from Koshary Corner following the program in the Museum Cafe.

Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt highlights the stories behind animal mummification and is on view from September 27, 2025–January 11, 2026.

Richard Ayodeji Ikhide Rites of Passage, 2025 pen, ink, and watercolor on paper 30 x 22 inches

Richard Ayodeji Ikhide Tales From Future Past | Opening Reception
Saturday, September 27 :: 6-8pm
@ CPM Gallery

CPM Gallery is thrilled to announce its upcoming exhibition of new works by Richard Ayodeji Ikhide, entitled Tales From Future Past. This marks the artist’s first solo show with the gallery.

Richard Ayodeji Ikhide creates works on paper using ink, watercolor, and gouache that investigate cosmology, mythmaking, and parallel realities. His practice is rooted in Nigeria’s cultural history and the Edo religion, where the world is divided into visible and invisible realms, with rituals and offerings used to interact with the spirit world. The visual style of Ikhide’s works melds traditions from his birthplace in Lagos with a wide range of influences he encountered as a young man growing up in London, including Japanese manga, comic books, and Renaissance artists such as Giovanni Tiepolo and William Blake.

Ikhide locates his world-building work in a recurring site called “Future Past”. This exhibition introduces three new bodies of work in that setting: ten small-scale (15 x 11 inches or smaller) tonal ink drawings, dense with cross-hatched detail reminiscent both of graphic novel illustration and Renaissance engravings; a suite of six medium sized (30 x 22 inches) watercolor and ink compositions that unfold as a sequence of vibrantly colored, cinematic vignettes that combine story, symbol, and atmosphere; and several irregularly shaped, large scale pieces depicting figures that use movement and dance as a vehicle to channel ancestral spirits.

Ikhide builds narratives through a fusion of intentional storytelling and intuitive free association. The figures are often accompanied by speech bubbles filled with amorphous shapes that evoke a universal form of communication beyond specific language. The scenes are at once ancient and futuristic, suggesting parallel worlds outside of a linear concept of time.

Tales From Future Past is also informed by Ikhide’s study of the 20th Century Romanian scholar of religion, Mircea Eliade’s writings on initiation and the passage of youth into adulthood, and his reflection on the scarcity of such communal spaces in contemporary urban life. By drawing on personal history as well as broader art-historical lineages, Ikhide highlights moments where specific spiritual traditions intersect with universal archetypes, reminding us that our stories form an evolving fabric of the human psyche.
