Soft Gym Unveiling Celebration
Wednesday, November 12 :: 5:30-8:30pm
@ YNot Lot

Mayor Scott Joins Bloomberg Philanthropies Officials, Inviting Light Artists and Invites the Public to ‘Bring their Light’ to Celebrate

There’s a light going on in Baltimore’s Station North Arts District, as the fourth installation of the Inviting Light public art initiative, Soft Gym, will be unveiled during a public party the evening of Wed. Nov. 12 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The celebration marks not only the debut of the immersive and welcoming space but also the official re-launch of the YNot Lot in it’s new location. Once again it will serve as a performance pavilion for Station North programming.

Part playground, part training ground, Soft Gym, by acclaimed artist duo Wickerham & Lomax, transforms the landscape into a surreal 3,825-sq.-ft.-exercise-arena where the physical, emotional, and social intertwine. It’s a space designed for the body as much as for the eyes, and a place where emotion, gesture, and behavior are flexed alongside muscle.

Free to attend, guests will enjoy an evening of music, movement, and tastes in the Ynot Lot and in Mobtown Ballroom. Enjoy bites and beverages in both locations, a special Inviting Light art making activity at North Avenue Market, and tour the neighboring Inviting Light sites and one night only light projections for a vibrant night to remember!

Remarks at 6:15 pm by Baltimore City’s Mayor Brandon Scott, Bloomberg Philanthropies officials, Derrick Adams, and the artists.

Native American Heritage Month Film Screening: Without Arrows
Thursday, November 13 :: 6-7:45pm
@ The Walters Art Museum

Location: Graham Auditorium
Registration required.

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, we invite you to join us for a special evening featuring a screening of Without Arrows, a film that chronicles the vibrancy and struggle of a Lakȟóta family and the ways long-held traditions live on today.

The film focuses on Delwin Elk Bear Fiddler, a champion grass dancer from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, who left his reservation as a young man to escape a trauma that splintered his family and to build a new life in Philadelphia. A decade later, he abandons his new life and returns home to his reservation to fulfill his mother’s ambition and carry on the legacy of their thiyóšpaye (extended family). Following the screening, enjoy a traditional dance performed by Delwin Elk Bear Fiddler and a Q&A with Delwin and Jonathan Olshefski, one of the film’s directors.

Artist Talk with Artist-in-Residence Jaz Erenberg
Thursday, November 13 :: 6:30pm
@ McManus Theatre, Loyola University Maryland

Join the Julio Fine Arts Gallery Thursday, November 13, at 6:30 p.m. in McManus Theatre for an artist talk with 2025-2026 Artist-in-Residence, Jaz Erenberg! Erenberg will be talking about her work as a muralist in Baltimore, and about some of the findings from our campus mural survey ahead of the creation of two public murals on campus in the spring. Come and find out what this is all about and stay for a small reception in McManus lobby afterwards!

AfroLatina artist Jaz Erenberg painted her first mural in 2017 and immediately knew that if she could find a way to engage the community around her, the mural could be that much more impactful! Over the last six years, her practice has grown through collaboration with communities to build creative ways to make them feel seen and heard throughout the process. Using workshops and events, communities have become an integral part of how she creates public artwork. When a community is involved in how their space can be transformed, their sense of ownership and pride is reignited, and they become a stronger, more connected community.

All Julio Fine Arts Gallery events are free and open to the public.

Film Premiere: “The Beat Goes On: The Story of Baltimore Beat”
Saturday, November 15 :: 6:30-9:30pm
@ SNF Parkway Theatre

You are cordially invited to join Baltimore Beat and 6pm Productions at the premiere of “The Beat Goes On: The Story of Baltimore Beat,” a documentary exploring Baltimore’s legacy of Black journalism, the end of 40-year-old cultural institution Baltimore City Paper, and police accountability in the wake of the 2015 uprising sparked by the death of Freddie Gray.

The film chronicles Editor-in-Chief Lisa Snowden and her team as they build a news outlet for all of the city.

“There’s no better time than now for this conversation about journalism and storytelling,” Snowden said. “We are living through the reality of what happens when the news isn’t inclusive, when the news doesn’t meet the needs of everyone in the community. The Beat is part of a community of news outlets that are trying to build something better. I’m grateful that we’ve been able to have our stories told in this way.”

6pm Productions, composed of director David Elliot, producer Dion Smith, and producer and recording artist Eze Jackson, has spent the last year following the Beat and interviewing co-founders Snowden and Brandon Soderberg, along with Beat staffers, local artists and musicians, journalism veterans like Mark Steiner and Baynard Woods, and longtime police accountability activist Tawanda Jones.

“We had this opportunity to tell the story of how the legacy of the Black press is still impacting journalists in Baltimore,” Elliot said.

Learn more about how the film came together and their takes on the state of journalism in Baltimore and in the United States in a talkback following the screening.

6:30 p.m. – Doors open
7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. – Film Screening
8:30 to 9:30 p.m. – Panel featuring Beat staffers and 6pm Productions

Mountain Air (Artist in Residency)
deadline November 28
posted by West Virginia University

The Mountain AIR Program is an artist residency developed by the Art in the Libraries Program at WVU Libraries. Building on the pilot residency in 2025, this initiative connects artists with the rich environmental archives held at the West Virginia & Regional History Center (WVRHC) to inspire new creative work and public engagement. By focusing on collections that document decades of environmental activism, conservation efforts, industry impact, and citizen response, this pilot residency supports artistic interpretations that reveal the ecological story of West Virginia.

Through project-based awards, Mountain AIR invites artists to delve into these collections—ranging from the papers of grassroots activists to the records of advocacy organizations and state agencies—and create visual works, installations, publications, performances, or other interpretive expressions. The goal is to spark dialogue around place, memory, and environmental justice while activating archival material for broader audiences.

The residency is open to all U.S.-based artists, with a preference for WVU alumni and those working in fields such as visual art, dance, writing, and cultural heritage (including curators and community-based practitioners). Proposals that highlight underrepresented narratives, elevate local knowledge, or explore the complex environmental history of the region will be given strong consideration.

Participants will publicly share their work through small exhibitions, talks, or collaborative projects at WVU Libraries or online platforms. Through this residency, the Mountain AIR Program seeks to breathe new life into archival materials and support artists who explore the intersection of land, labor, activism, and art in West Virginia.

For information about the inaugural WVU Libraries artist residency program, see: Artist in Residency | Art in the Libraries | West Virginia University.

From the Ground Up: Juried Group Exhibition — Visionary Art Collective × Warnes Contemporary, curated by Erika b Hess
deadline December 14
posted by Visionary Art Collective

Visionary Art Collective is partnering with Warnes Contemporary in New York City to present our annual in-person juried group exhibition, From the Ground Up, curated by Erika b Hess

From the Ground Up: Contemporary Landscape is an exhibition that explores how artists investigate the landscape today.  Framed as a point of departure rather than a fixed view, the landscape becomes a jumping off point. From abstracted terrains and constructed environments to fleeting moments of light in plein air, artists engage the landscape to examine perception and how it relates to culture, politics, and memory. By implementing various ways of making such as abstraction, realism, invention and experimental forms, artists turn to the landscape to contemplate and question how we see and what we deem valuable in our surroundings.

We invite submissions across all disciplines that engage landscape—urban or rural, real or imagined, material or symbolic to submit their work for consideration.

From the Ground Up  will be presented at Warnes Contemporary in Brooklyn on April 23, 2026 and will run for approximately six to eight weeks. This exhibition will be actively promoted across social media through Visionary Art Collective and Warnes Contemporary, with all works available on Artsy. In addition, a select number of artists will be featured in New Visionary Magazine.
