About Teri Henderson

Teri Henderson is a Baltimore-based independent curator, author, and editor with a distinguished talent for crafting compelling narratives and shaping critical discourse in contemporary art and culture. As the visionary behind the @blackcollagists platform, which she launched in 2020, she established a vital global hub for artists of the Diaspora, fostering community and re-charting art historical narratives. Her authority in the field is cemented by her acclaimed book, Black Collagists: The Book (Kanyer Publishing, 2021).

As the Arts and Culture Editor of the Baltimore Beat, a Black-led Black-run, nonprofit newspaper, Henderson consistently provides insightful and critical perspectives through diverse storytelling. Her writing regularly is featured in leading publications such as Artforum, the Washington Post, and numerous other outlets. Her extensive curatorial practice includes co-curating “LAYERS: The Art of Contemporary Collage” at Maryland Institute College of Art in January 2025, serving as a consulting curator for “New Worlds: Women to Watch 2024″ at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and notably, curating the inaugural Scout Affordable Art Fair with Derrick Adams in May 2025. She also served as a jury member for the 2023 exhibition “Histories Collide: Jackie Milad x Fred Wilson x Nekisha Durrett.”

Henderson’s influence in media and journalism is further recognized through her participation in prestigious programs, including the 2020 Momus Emerging Critics Resident, the 2024 Poynter-Koch Media and Journalism Fellow, and the 2024 Maynard Institute for Journalism Education Fellow. In 2024, Baltimore Magazine honored her as a “GameChanger” for her leadership in Baltimore’s creative community, underscoring her commitment to empowering artists of color.

DEVOTION, DREAMS AND DESTINY: solo exhibiton by VILLAGER | Closing Reception + Performance
Thursday, October 9 :: 6-9pm
@ Eubie Blake Cultural Center

We are pleased to invite you to the Performance Night and Closing Reception of Devotion, Dreams, and Destiny: a solo exhibition by Nigerian–born Transdisciplinary Artist, VILLAGER (b. A. Adekunle Adaranijo). Join us on October 9, 2025, from 6PM – 8PM, in celebrating the culmination of this exhibition of painting, site-specific installation, experimental film, and collage. The evening will offer a final opportunity to experience the works on view and engage with the artist. We also welcome you to gather in celebration as the exhibition comes to a close with a performance from VILLAGER and Bao Nguyen.

In this program, both Bao Nguyen and VILLAGER will independently weave together live performances using music, movement, spoken word, and field recordings to recontextualize the exhibition, eliciting the revelations that await at the crossroads where we dream with devotion – glimpsing, listening, and holding the whisperings of our destiny. The closing reception is free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $15 ATD.

For additional information on the exhibition, please contact the gallery at (410) 225-3130 or email info@vllager.com for all acquisition inquiries

Bao Nguyen is a performance and visual artist based in Baltimore and raised in Vietnam. They improvise through movement, action, voice and words to unravel a range of emotions. Recently, they recited Cardi B’s “WAP”, rolled in a blanket while being naked, ate soil, scolded the audience and asked for their keys. Bao messes up the context of DIY and institutional spaces they perform in to uncover collective intimacy, openness and vulnerability.

VILLAGER (b. Abdul Rasheed Adekunle Adaranijo in Lagos, Nigeria) is a Nigerian-born International Artist, Cultural Producer, and African Spirituality Practitioner. Through spirit-led intuition, VILLAGER connects with the sacred and evokes ancestral rhythms of divine transformation and harmony as sonical technologies for forging new pathways of release, renewal, and transformation of futures we can all occupy. VILLAGER’s sound, movement, rhythm, and spoken word are in reverence to the ancestors and the land, time, and their continuous journey of becoming a vessel of the right-minded.

Pandarayuhan: Home is a Memory (Exhibition) | Parol Lantern Making
Friday, October 10 :: 6-8pm
@ Creative Alliance

On View: FRI OCT 24 – SAT NOV 22, 2025
Parol Lantern Making: FRI OCT 10 | 6-8PM
Exhibition Opening: THU OCT 23 | 6-8PM
Artist Talk & Closing Reception: FRI NOV 21 | 7-9PM

Pandarayuhan: Home is a Memory is a solo exhibition by Anna Divinagracia that reflects on the complexities of home, identity, and longing through the lens of the Filipino immigrant experience. Rooted in personal history, the exhibition deconstructs familiar symbols and spaces of a house to reconstruct what it means to create a home, especially when shaped by two vastly different places: the Philippines and Baltimore.

The show weaves together lens-based work, sculptural installations, and alternative photographic processes that contrast the two places. Divinagracia builds a visual language shaped by fragmented memory, bureaucracy, and dislocation by using photographs, family archives, and immigration documents as recurring materials embedded and collaged into the surfaces of the work. These documents act as both personal record and visual anchor, representing the quiet, ongoing tension between belonging and uncertainty.

Pandarayuhan, meaning migration or the act of moving away, is not just about departure. It’s about the emotional labor of building something from fragments, and the quiet resistance in claiming space while also tethered elsewhere. The exhibition invites viewers to consider the quiet and often unseen details of immigrant life, the paperwork, the waiting, the adaptation.

No Soy Ana Agnabi | Artist Talk + Book Signing
Sunday, October 12 :: 6-8pm
@ Goucher College Silber Gallery

Goucher College proudly presents No Soy Ana Agnabi, a solo exhibition by Baltimore-based artist Jackie Milad, featuring new and recent works developed through the support of the Creative Capital Award and the Rubys Artist Grant. This exhibition centers on Milad’s reinterpretation of ancient funerary figures known as shabtis, examining their global dispersal, symbolic resonance, and the ways in which cultural heritage is fragmented and reframed through contemporary practice.

In No Soy Ana Agnabi, Milad expands her signature visual language—layered wall collages, sculptural interventions, and archival imagery—into a series of immersive installations that reclaim the shabti as both object and witness. Drawing from ancient Egyptian funerary practices and working in dialogue with Goucher College’s own collection of shabtis, Milad juxtaposes historical artifacts with hand-crafted surrogates made from bronze, epoxy resin, ceramic, and wood. These figures become agents in a larger narrative about diaspora, colonial extraction, and the emotional toll of cultural displacement.

The exhibition’s centerpiece is a series of altars densely populated with shabti forms, their collective presence evoking both an imagined afterlife and the haunting reality of scattered histories. Monumental collages—some extending up to 11 feet—surround the installation, incorporating fragments of language, textiles, and drawing that evoke a palimpsest of place and identity.

This project marks a major evolution in Milad’s career, reflecting a deepening of her engagement with themes of cultural hybridity, stewardship, and the politics of collecting. Accompanying the exhibition is a bilingual publication (English and Arabic) featuring new essays by leading scholars in Egyptology and cultural history.

No Soy Ana Agnabi  is not merely a meditation on the past—it is a vivid call to reimagine how we carry, question, and reclaim cultural memory in the present.

Beyond Baltimore Street: Living Lumbee Legacies | Exhibition Launch
Monday, October 13 :: 6:30pm
@ Eastpoint Mall Food Court

Date of Event: Monday, October 13, 2025

Time of Event: 6:30 PM ET

Location of Event: Eastpoint Mall Food Court

7838 Eastpoint Mall

Baltimore, Maryland 21224

In celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day, Beyond Baltimore Street: Living Lumbee Legacies, a public exhibition of the year-long Library of Congress American Folklife Center Community Collections Grant project of community artist Ashley Minner Jones (Lumbee) and photographer Jill Fannon Prevas, in collaboration with 16 Baltimore Lumbee elders, will open at Eastpoint Mall.

The place today known as Baltimore is part of the ancestral homelands of the Piscataway and the Susquehannock peoples. A diverse host of folks from Indigenous nations throughout the land have passed through or lived in Baltimore at different times and still do. The majority of Native people living in Baltimore today are citizens of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, the largest American Indian tribal nation east of the Mississippi River and the ninth largest within the United States.

Beyond Baltimore Street is an oral history and photo documentary project that celebrates the vibrant, fascinating, everyday lives of Baltimore Lumbee elders. In their youth, they migrated from the Lumbee tribal homeland in North Carolina and settled along and around E. Baltimore Street, forming what was once affectionately known as “the reservation.” In the decades since, most have moved beyond Baltimore Street, yet remain in the region and in community with one another. Being from one unique place and having lived most of their lives in another, they created a new culture that has been inherited and riffed upon by the generations of Baltimore Lumbee that descend from them.

Over the course of a year, Ashley Minner Jones and Jill Fannon Prevas have collaborated with 16 Lumbee elders to produce forever-accessible records of their everyday lives and likenesses. They have recorded new oral history interviews and accompanied elders to photograph them doing whatever they like to do for fun, whether walking the mall, playing bingo, buying lotto tickets, or singing in church.

The exhibition consists of 20 free-standing banner displays, each featuring a portrait of elders and a QR code to access more images, full interview recordings, transcripts, and more information about the project. The opening reception will include remarks from two participating elders and the artists. ASL interpretation of the program will be provided by Joyful Signing. A listening station, free postcard prints, and light fare will be available during the reception. The public is cordially invited!

Beyond Baltimore Street: Living Lumbee Legacies was made possible in part by funding from the Library of Congress. The exhibition debuts in the place where many of the elders gather to exercise and socialize daily thanks to Eastpoint Mall and MCB Real Estate.

Call for Entry: UNDER 2500
deadine November 1
posted by Maryland Art Place

Deadline: Saturday, November 1 @ MIDNIGHT | Application
PROSPECTUS

CALL FOR ENTRY: Have your work purchased by local buyers & collectors, just in time for the holidays! Maryland Art Place (MAP) is seeking artists for UNDER $2500, our upcoming winter benefit exhibition & affordable art sale. The exhibition will include approximately 1-3 works by each selected artist (scale dependent – in the case of smaller works more than 3 pieces may be accepted). Each individual piece must retail for $2,500 or less.

Why UNDER $2500? In the last 2 years inflation has been a huge contributing factor to rising artwork sales prices. Simply put, the cost of goods for artists to create their art is far higher than it used to be. The majority of galleries consider the most important contemporary artwork value segments to be under $5,000–$10,000 according to ARTSY (2023.) It is with that in mind that MAP is presenting UNDER $2500 as affordable.

In our 13th year of the sale, we look forward to showcasing a more diverse and broader range of artworks. Artists are encouraged to submit works retailing in both the UNDER $500 and UNDER $2500 categories to include original works, editioned prints, sculptures and more.

UNDER $2500 is MAP’s winter benefit. Proceeds from the sale of artwork will be split 50/50 between Maryland Art Place and the artist. The event is ticketed ($40) however participating artists are welcomed free of charge.

UNDER $2500 is a hybrid, physical and virtual exhibition event. The physical exhibition opens Friday, November 21  from 6pm-10pm. Artworks may be purchased by patrons and taken off the walls on a first come first served basis that night. All works will be wrapped in brown paper with MAP’s signature holiday bow.

he virtual sale will launch the very next day, Saturday November 22 at 10 am and run through BLACK FRIDAY, November 28, 10pm. The virtual sale will include more artists than the physical sale. *Please note: applications received will be selected for either the virtual sale (featured online) exclusively, or for both the physical (featured in gallery) AND virtual exhibition (featured online). Your acceptance letter will indicate in which capacity your work will be presented.

MAP will maintain gallery hours Saturday, November 22 from Noon-4pm for any remaining physical works that may be left for purchase.
