Never Forget… We are Humans | Exhibition Closes
Thursday, July 31
@ Full Circle Gallery

“Never Forget… We are Humans” is a large photo collection, originally exhibited in 2015 following the death of Freddie gray, originally titled, “The Baltimore Civil Protest & Demonstration Photo Collection”. It’s a collection of over 800 images, printed as large sheets of 44” wide paper. We printed one or two per week for 6 weeks or more following the initial week of outrage. Dozens of photographers sent images and we simply formatted them into 5x7s and printed them in large grids.

The show was initially out of necessity. The work was / is meant to generate discussion and reflection for imagery (of real life) that was zipping by and forgotten on social media. Over 24 photographers submitted work and we had a large group discussion in June about the photographers’ experiences during the unrest – with over half of the participating image-makers joining us. The exhibit was an organic accumulation of events and the discussion took place at the request of the photographers.

In revisiting the photographs, we want to remember those moments and the conversations, the faces, the tragedy and the fragile, humanistic image of our city during those tumultuous times. We also want to consider what is different or has remained the same.

Eight vivid pieces can be found in the 2nd installment of the Visiting Artist Collection at BLIFTD, balanced with striking colors alongside fluid patterns and centered on the symbol of the horse. The question? As a collective, why and how do we understand its many reflections in today’s world? Join us on July 31st from 6 to 8 PM for a discussion with BLIFTD Visiting Artist, Michael Haskins Jr. He’ll share insights from his current practice and background leading up to the Tres Stallion Collection. All through the framing of the horse, we’ll have a chance to dive into the mind of the multidisciplinary creative and visionary behind Currency Studio. – RSVP

Curatorial Statement by Michael Haskins, Jr.

Let The Horses Run Exhibition at Bliftd Art Stvdios introduces the work of Designer and Creator Michael Haskins Jr (B. 1991, Baltimore, Md). Haskins Jr untraditionally proceeds to build on media, which continue to set the standard for his immediate environment.

Haskins developed an imagination for various lifestyles earlier in life, inspired by ways of living outside of Baltimore, Md. Throughout the past decade, he has worked on retail projects, creative direction for Artists, as well as consulting for Brands. Today his main focus is whatever is going on at Currency Studio.

This exhibition displays a number of works of Art in relation to a past collection titled “Tre Stallion” By Currency Studio.

Let The Horses Run expresses Michael’s thinking around how thought provoking horses are from the beginning of Transportation, to Classism, to Symbols of sought upon vehicles. Unconsciously everyone’s goal is a Horse. Even down to what it symbolizes, Power, Freedom, Speed, To Age Well..”

1414 Key Highway  Baltimore, MD USA
(Directly across from The Baltimore Museum of Industry)

Open to the Public:

Tuesday–Thursday  11am – 6pm
Friday–Saturday  11am – 5pm
Sunday–Monday : Closed

Public Opening Reception : Thursday, July 31 6pm-9pm

It is our pleasure to debut the multimedia visual art group exhibition Forever Home, curated by Alex French at Design Distillery. This ongoing series merges art from over 25 incredible artists from the DM(W)V with innovative interior design to live well and collect with passion.

We threw out the alienating art speak, the sterile operating room exhibition space, the price list hunt and matching game, the fabricated feeling that art isn’t made for you to understand or collect. Our art exhibition series presents intentional interior design elements as a collaborative solution in the conversation of how we can support artists and culture. We welcome you to discover these artists’ worlds and envision their work in your own home.

The exhibition will run on an ongoing basis, accompanied by artist talks and music events, with new exhibition series installments debuting quarterly. Stay tuned @ddistillery and join our email newsletter to learn more.

BLACK AUGUST Art Exhibit
deadline August 12
posted by Baltimore Artists Against Apartheid, Crows Nest, and Baltimore PSL

Black August commemorates and carries forward the struggle and sacrifices of Black political prisoners and freedom fighters – from George Jackson’s work organizing behind bars in San Quentin to the Attica Prison rebellion to the Haitian Revolution to Nat Turner’s rebellion and the March on Washington. These moments of resistance and sacrifice, among countless others, have challenged the oppression and exploitation of Black people and especially prisoners, which remain foundational to the immense wealth of the U.S. capitalist class. This Black August, Baltimore Artists Against Apartheid, Crows Nest, and Baltimore PSL present BLACK AUGUST, calling for art submissions that honor this legacy of struggle for liberation. More than just a reflection on past rebellions, this exhibition is a rallying cry to carry the fight forward today.

We are accepting artworks of all mediums for an in person gallery show at Crows Nest on Saturday, August 23rd.

We encourage folks to make new works, but we will also happily accept already completed works!

Call for Entry, Masks
deadline August 15
posted by SE Center for Photography

We all wear masks. At Halloween, Mardi Gras. At work we are one person, at home, another, and with friends we have yet more masks to choose from. We’re looking for images with masks, literal and figurative, color or BW, analog, digital or antique processes, photographers of all skill levels and locations are welcome.

Our juror for Masks is Bootsy Holler. Bootsy Holler is an intuitive American artist who has worked in photography for 30 years. She is best known for her work as a portraitist, beginning with intimate depictions of herself and her friends at the center of Seattle’s pivotal music scene during the early 1990s and 2000s. These formative years working both ends of the lens cemented her style and methodology. Her empathic journalistic approach informed her work as she segued into a thriving commercial and editorial practice while at the same time always creating art. Her art revolves around family, memory, emotions, eco-feminism, and giving feelings to the inanimate.

35-40 selected images will hang in the SE Center’s Virtual gallery space for approximately one month. In addition, selected images are featured in the SE Center social media accounts (FB, IG, Twitter) and an archived, online slideshow. A video walkthrough of each exhibition is also featured and archived.
