Swimming Pool – Katie Pumphrey | Opening Reception
Friday, September 5 :: 6-9pm
@ Creative Alliance

Swimming Pool is a solo exhibition by Baltimore based interdisciplinary artist and ultramarathon open water swimmer, Katie Pumphrey. Swimming Pool features all new paintings and a site-specific installation.

Deeply connected to her experiences in the water, Pumphrey explores the repetition of our anxieties and fears, along with the humor we call on to swim through it all. Her work explores how our imagination plays tricks on us, especially when stress is high and the journey is far.

Pumphrey’s paintings reference the compositions of historical paintings through playful colors and images of swimmers and marine life. Her engagement with paintings like Rubens ‘ “Three Graces” and Copley’s “Watson and the Shark” as cultural references takes classical bodies and submerges them in contemporary waters of fear and anxiety. A declaration that our deepest fears and anxieties can become our most profound teachers.

Echoed in the repetition of a swimmer’s hands and the lurking suggestion of sea monsters, this call and response with history combines these tensions, and dives into the connectedness between human instincts and play.

Through an opening reception paired with playful performances, and artist talks that center dialogue over monologue, as well as community partnerships, Pumphrey creates community where connection becomes a shared experience, and art serves as a necessity.

Back to the Real World, A solo exhibition by Mike Byson | Opening Reception + Short Film Premiere
Saturday, September 6 :: 6-8pm
@ Atrium Artspace

Atrium Artspace proudly presents Back to the Real World, a multimedia journal documenting Mike Byson’s travels through Asia in 2023. Through painting, drawing, photography, music, and film, the artist writes a love letter to an eye-opening experience.

On view from September 6 to October 4, 2025, the exhibition features multimedia artworks by Mike Byson, a Baltimore-based visual artist, filmmaker, musician, and animator. Recognized for his graTiti murals found all over Baltimore, Mike Byson was flooded with inspiration during his travels.

Mike is a firm believer in exploring new places and meeting new people to get outside his comfort zone and develop his perspective of the world. However, his experiences in Asia shifted this perspective in ways he couldn’t imagine. Back to the Real World is a tribute to the indescribable beauty, the heart-breaking truths, and all the warm, welcoming people who touched his soul along the way.

In addition to his paintings, drawings, and prints, Byson is excited to perform songs from Meet the Bysons by The Bysons, an EP recorded with his wife Jadie upon their return from Asia and released on July 24, 2025. Viewers will also enjoy an animated short film entitled Mike Byson Travels Through Asia, which was selected for inclusion in the Sweaty Eyeballs Animation Festival in 2025 and will be publicly shown for the first time during the opening reception of Back to the Real World on September 6 at Atrium Artspace.

Byson has a professional background as an arts educator, working with youth in a role at a Baltimore arts non-profit.

Extreme Heat Fellowship Show | Opening reception (and Crow’s Nest one-year anniversary party)

Closing reception:

Extreme heat is a rapidly-growing threat to public health in urban areas around the world. In Baltimore, the summer of 2024 was the second-warmest in three decades. Two dozen people died of heat-related causes in Maryland, including sanitation worker Ronald Silver. Nationally, at least 2,300 deaths were related to extreme heat, the highest number in 45 years of records. Given the trends in climate change, this threat will only continue to grow. The need to confront this threat will become ever-more important. This show will feature original art from our three fellowship winners, who will collaborate with academics from the Johns Hopkins University and with local public health professionals. The exhibit will deepen our understanding of the challenge and how to confront it.

Our Extreme Heat Fellows are Kei ItoRowan Bathurst, and Rachel Stein.

About the play: A talented and experienced Black actress has been cast in Chaos in Belleville, an anti-lynching play set to open on Broadway. She’s paid her dues throughout the years, playing stereotypical supporting roles in second-rate shows, and is ready for her star turn. Chaos in Belleville, written by a white playwright, might not be quite as enlightening a piece as she’s been hoping for, but that doesn’t mean it won’t sell out. A cast of multigenerational Black actors rehearse under the purview of a white director and stage manager, and as the rehearsal process unfolds, theatre conventions and racial politics collide, resulting in a surprisingly funny yet deeply piercing look at the entertainment industry.

Fells Point Corner Theatre is housed in an 1850 firehouse located at 251 S. Ann Street in Upper Fells Point, the result of a merger between two community theaters in the greater Fells Point area: the Fells Point Theatre, and the Corner Theatre in 1987. Fells Point Corner Theatre is a fully nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization operating under the corporate name Bristol Players for the past 37 years.
