Playful Strategies

How often are you given the opportunity to celebrate the best in local emerging arts in print? This was the job I was given last month – to curate a group exhibition of my favorite Baltimore artists in Baltimore Style Magazine’s September Arts issue.

The result was Group Dynamics, a six page feature with giant images floating on white ‘gallery’ walls and a chance to educate Style readers on some of Baltimore’s most accomplished and unique visual practitioners. My ideal group show includes painters Jo Smail, Amy Sherald, and Seth Adelsberger, collage artist Zöe Charlton, mixed media prankster Andrew Liang, comic Dina Kelberman, and animator Karen Yasinsky.

If you haven’t seen it on news stands yet this month, make a point to check out Baltimore Style Magazine’s September arts issue. I was amazed at how much art they were able to cram into one magazine, including a number of art features on the Station North Tool Library, Springsteen Gallery (I wrote that one too), Rebecca Nagle and Hannah Brancato’s new FORCE project, Stephen Towns, Photographer Martha Cooper, Mosaic Makers Lauren Siegel and Pam Stein, Jeffrey Kent and Jeanine Turner’s Unexpected Art, along with drama, music, books, and other interdisciplinary subjects.

Here’s the intro to my article written by Jess Bizik, Editor at Style:

Solo exhibitions offer a unique opportunity to get intimate with an individual’s work. But we love a great group show—a chance to enjoy the connections, contradictions and energy surrounding a mix of inspired innovators in the art world. So we asked Cara Ober, founder of BmoreArt, to curate a STYLE “exhibit” featuring some of her favorite emerging and unexpected artists. The results are “odd and funny” as Ober puts it. And a great testament to the talent in our town.

You can read the entire article and see better images of the ‘exhibit’ at Style’s Website.

The idea of a master narrative and the Eurocentric bias of earlier editions of this text have been pressured, and forced to make room for multiplicity and inclusivity. The history of graphic design appears here fresher, livelier, and more relevant.
