International travelers at BWI will have the opportunity to experience bold, muscular works by Baltimore artists Lauren Boilini, Sean McDonough, and Ann Rentschler. The exhibit, titled ‘Stroke: Gesture, Mark, Muscle’ will be on display at the airport through December 29 and is an extension of School 33’s programming. The exhibit is just half of a two part exhibition of the same title, which will be in School 33’s Main Gallery in Federal Hill.
Curator René Treviño purposely chose artists for ‘Stroke’ who employ a forceful gesture and intuitive mark making to explore a range of process-based painting. Treviño explains that he chose these three particular artists because they have all reached a critical point in their work where “speed and agility is actually the result of years of consistent studio practice and persistent dedication.”
According to the curator, “The word ‘Stroke’ in the title of the exhibit is meant to reference not only a brush stroke, but also any bold gesture that gives the work a palpable sense of energy. These works have the artists’ entire bodies built up within the bold marks and gestures; they are cathartic and full of fevered excitement even when the strokes are seemingly controlled in systematic compositions. The giant directional strokes, gestures and marks in the included works speak to strength, freedom, infallible confidence and a celebration of abstract art making.”
