sophiajacob is proud to present a solo exhibition by Baltimore-based painter Nikholis Planck. Curated by Deirdre Smith, the exhibition will include a selection of works which emphasize the role of drawing and painting as essential to the sustainability of Planck’s robust studio practice.
Nikholis Planck (b. 1987) has exhibited his work widely throughout the region in the form of paintings, prints, artists’ books, and publications as well as performance, photography, sculpture, and installation. Most recently, Nik has presented artwork at Current Space, Towson University, and the Cade Art Gallery in Arnold, Maryland. Editions of Nik’s books, zines, prints, and objects have been produced by the Kingsboro Press, Los Angeles, Oso Press, Los Angeles, and Medium Rare Projects, New York. Working as a half of the collaborative team Armacost/Planck, Nik has orchestrated major sculptural projects in Baltimore at 2640 Space, Open Space, and at the Contemporary Museum’s LISTE ’12 exhibition.
Deirdre Smith (b. 1988), relocated to Maryland in 2011 from the San Francisco Bay Area, where she worked as an assistant for the Jack Fischer Gallery. Currently, she is pursuing an MA in Art History at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Deirdre lives and works in Baltimore, where she maintains the blog Experiential Surprise as a forum for her writing about contemporary art in Baltimore and Washington D.C. Deirdre’s essay, Nikholis Planck: 18 x 24, will accompany a full-color catalog of the exhibition. Gallery hours are Saturdays 1 – 4 p.m. or by appointment.
