sophiajacob is pleased to present an exhibition of new artwork by Christopher LaVoie. For his first solo show in Baltimore, Chris will exhibit sculptures that continue to explore personal and sociological landscapes using the language of minimalism and conceptual art. Collectively, the work in the exhibition can be seen as a meditation on uncertainty and change, as each piece contains an element of unrehearsed action or performance. Here, the artist treats each arrangement as a platform or stage on which elementary materials such as water, wax, concrete, and sand react to a unique situation. Setting up processes that embrace chance, variance, and failure, LaVoie aims to map the unknown patterns that are revealed as raw substances change state or teeter on the verge of a physical transformation.
Ultimately, LaVoie uses these uncovered patterns as models to help describe (the) contingencies of psychological and sociological activity. Born in 1981 in Wichita Falls, Texas, Christopher LaVoie received a BFA from the university of Arizona in 2004, and an MFA from the Rinehart School of Sculpture in 2008. He has shown his work extensively throughout the region, notably in solo exhibitions at both the Arlington Arts Center in Virginia and McDaniel College in Maryland. In 2010, Chris exhibited sculpture and video work at the Baltimore Museum of Art as a finalist for the Sondheim Prize. Most recently he was included in the Baltimore LISTE ’12 exhibition, where he presented work using the artist’s body as a tool of measurement and organization. Chris lives and works in Baltimore.
