Tsai Ming-Liang’s prequel to The Wayward Cloud is in someways one of the most desperately romantic pieces of fucked up filmmaking that the romantic comedy genre can squeeze out. Even though it is obviously not what first comes to mind with the genre, some of the most poignant combinations of themes found in romantic comedies are fully executed in this film – slapstick absurdity, desperation, and heartbreak. In Neal Reinalda’s new mix made special for this filmic occasion, what appears is the “fucked up” quality found in the chopped and screwed genre but rendered quite romantic through his choice of pairing popular R&B songs and overly sentimental sounds found in nature. The result is a subtly pleasant mix with a touch of deadpan humor that mimics the film in a surprising way.
