C. Grimaldis Gallery is pleased to present “Confluence of Opposites – Panta Rei” featuring works by Caroline Ramersdorfer and John Van Alstine. The exhibition will open Wednesday, March 16, 2011 with a reception from 6-8 pm.
Two internationally renowned sculptors come to Baltimore. Each with impressive careers Caroline Ramersdorfer and John Van Alstine exhibit their recent works side by side from March 16 to May 6, 2011. In deciding to exhibit together Ramersdorfer explains that they were influenced by Greek philosophy. The title “Confluence of Opposites – Panta Rei” is inspired by a fragment of Heracleitos of Efesos the Greek philosopher who states that one never steps in a river twice. Suggesting that though the river stays the same, its waters change and therefor make possible the continued existence of other things.” Van Alstine adds that although they each use similar media the two artists are oppositional in many ways. The two artists’ approach to materials, philosophy of intent and content of their work are distinct yet they find inspiration in their differences.
Caroline Ramersdorfer is an internationally exhibited and honored sculptor. “Confluence of Opposites – Panta Rei” will be the artist’s first exhibition at the C. Grimaldis Gallery. Ramersdorfer is in many public collections including the Robert T. Webb Sculpture Garden, Dalton, GA; Eda Garden Museum, Yokohama, Tokyo, Japan; City of Beijing China, 2008 Olympic Park Exhibition Collection, and Culture Department City of Vienna, Austria. In 2010 Ramersdorfer was included in the 12th International Cairo Biennial, Egypt.
John Van Alstine is exhibited extensively in the United States and around the world. Selected public collections include Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; Denver Museum of Art, Colorado; Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon, Portugal and City of Beijing, China, 2008 Olympic Park Exhibition Collection. He is a recipient of the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant and an Individual Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Van Alstine has been represented by C. Grimaldis Gallery since 1984.
