Renée van der Stelt: Fugitive Drawings at the Amalie Rothschild Gallery, Creative Alliance
On view Dec 3-19, 2009

Renee van der Stelt spent 2008-09 in Roswell, NM, surrounded by desert grasses and open sky. These new works inspired by her time there focus on revealing hidden aspects in the local geography. Ink and graphite drawings on paper depict transient elements in the desert and sky such as the movement of cranes, starlings and bats in flight. Other works show the varied quality of rain drops from one day to the next along with clouds formed by grass fires at Bitter Lake. The wind is reflected in a drawing of a dust devil or the movement of grass. van der Stelt seeks to find a way to understand and show short-lived movements in space. www.reneevanderstelt.com

Torkwase Dyson & Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum: astro_nautic -done well
Main Gallery. On view Nov 7-Dec 19. Opens Sat Nov 7, 5-7pm. Performances Thu Dec 3, 7:30pm.

Artists Torkwase Dyson and Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum live fearlessly in the world as it is, in a state of becoming, where visual culture elides with visual metaphor, and dragons appear as domineering specters of globalized adaptation and alter egos journey bravely through landscapes that are a fusion of myth and autobiographical make-believe.
