The Homewood Art Workshops kicks off its 35th anniversary celebration with a slide talk by renowned landscape painter Stuart Shils on Nov. 2, 2009. Shils’ talk, “27 Years Outside,” will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Room 101 of the F. Ross Jones Building, Mattin Center, on the Homewood campus at 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. A reception will follow Shils’ presentation.

A Philadelphia native, Shils has been a devoted plein air landscapist since 1982. His richly atmospheric paintings of his hometown, as well as Ireland, Israel and Italy, have been exhibited in New York, Boston, San Francisco and Tel Aviv. Shils’ 13 summers spent painting on the coast of County Mayo, Ireland were the subject of the 2004 PBS documentary, Ballycastle.

Shils, 55, teaches master classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and has been an annual visiting critic at the Vermont Studio Center for ten years. He is represented by the Tibor de Nagy Gallery and Davis & Langdale Company in New York. Publications including the New York Times, Art in America, The New Yorker and The New Republic review his work regularly.

The Homewood Art Workshops were founded in 1974 by painter and former Maryland Institute College of Art president, Eugene Leake (1911-2005). This event is dedicated to his memory.

Shils’ talk, “27 Years Outside,” is co-sponsored by Homewood Art Workshops and Homewood Arts Programs. Visitor parking on campus is available in the South Garage, 3101 Wyman Park Drive, Baltimore, Md. 21211. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call 410-516-6705.
