Artist Isabel Manalo has been exhibiting her work nationally and throughout the Washington DC area since completing her MFA in Painting at Yale University in 1999. She has been awarded two consecutive fellowships (2008, 2009) to the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. In 2003, she was awarded the Juror’s Choice Award at the McLean Project for the Arts painting biennial, and was a semi-finalist for the Trawick Prize in both 2004 and 2008. Manalo’s work has been exhibited in such museums as the Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Katzen Art Center, The Arlington Arts Center and The Creative Alliance in Baltimore. Her work is in numerous collections both private and public including The National Academy of Sciences and several US Embassies.
Isabel Manalo’s exhibition, Once, Upon, is a collection of new paintings where innocence and danger reside in a verdant and timeless place. It is a space where her two daughters exist and even seem to belong to — as in a garden or sanctuary. At the same moment, it is a place where they can be vulnerable in the lushness of their surroundings.
