Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) painting faculty member Derrick Adams, curatorial director of Rush Arts Gallery & Resource Center in New York City, brings together MICA alumni and current students working in a variety of media for Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye. The month long show, which opens Monday, Oct. 13, is on view through Sunday, Nov. 16 in the galleries of The Gateway, MICA’s brand new student life and residence center. A reception takes place Thursday, Nov. 13, 5-7 p.m.
“Critical discussions on race, religion, sexuality, and ownership mutate from the previously established standard formulas of ‘representing’ to the endless options for masquerade explored by today’s contemporary artists of color,” Adams says in his curator’s statement. “Living with the many contradictions in the way we embrace and represent culture, these artists are free to interpret the past, giving us an ever changing and expanding perspective on our culture and ourselves.”
