If you are like me, you are biting your fingernails down to the nubbins, trying not to listen to the news, and desperately wishing it were next week already. I can’t take it anymore! Every time I hear the phrase “spread the wealth” or “Fox News” or “my friends” I want to punch somebody. Why does it seem like nobody wants the good guy to win here? Why are people responding to McCrazy’s win-at-all-cost tactics? Why does a spoiled rotten rich misogynist with seven or more houses resonate with poor people? I just don’t get it. Therefore, I decided to close my ears and eyes to all media except the Huff Post until election day. Just for sanity’s sake.

Until a friend sent me a link to this portfolio of images, that is. I have to say that, looking at these photos, I felt quieter and calmer. I felt moved and proud. Nobody knows who will win – or who will steal – this election. But, looking at these images, I felt reassured, that things are moving in the right direction. How about that for the power of art? Yes, photo-journalism is art.

Travels With Barack

Four years ago Time photographer Callie Shell met Barack Obama backstage when she was covering presidential candidate John Kerry. She sent her editor more photographs of Obama than Kerry. When asked why, she said, “I do not know. I just have a feeling about him. I think he will be important down the road.” Her first photo essay on Obama was two and half years ago. She has stuck with him ever since. To view this portfolio of images, click here.
