The C. Grimaldis Gallery is pleased to present GRACE HARTIGAN: New Painting. The exhibition opens Thursday, November 29th with a reception from 5:30 – 7:30 PM.
Grace Hartigan has been actively painting since the 1950’s when she made her reputation in New York as a member of the abstract expressionist’s movement. In the 1960s she moved to Baltimore and since 1978 has had 18 solo exhibitions at the C. Grimaldis Gallery. The work in this exhibition includes paintings and works on paper that are a continuation of Hartigan’s contemporary interepretations of the Old Masters.
Hartigan’s work can be found in museum collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago,Il; the Baltimore Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, NYC; Carnegie Institute Museum of Art, PA; Guggenheim Museum, NYC; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC; and the Museum Of Modern Art, NYC. In addition to her studio work she is founder and director of the Hoffberger School graduate program at the Maryland Institute College of Art.
An exhibition catalog with full color images and an essay by curator and writer Domique Nahas has been printed on occastion of this exhibition as well as in celebration of the C. Grimaldis Gallery’s 30th Anniversary. Excerpt from essay by Dominique Nahas included in exhibition catalog:
Matisse once remarked, “I have always tried to hide my efforts and wished my works to have a light joyousness of sprintime which never let’s anyone suspect the labors it has cost me.” What is true of the French master is also true of Grace Hartigan’s rigor in which her control is leavened with sensuality and deep feeling. Her layering of experiential nuances within her work appear to us as inevitable — simplicity manifested through instantaneous spontaneity. Yet the directness, lack of self-consciousness and freshness in her work has been perfected over a lifetime of commitment to mindfulness.”
