Landscape painter Diana Horowitz will present a slide talk on her work on Monday, Oct. 27, at The Johns Hopkins University.
“Diana Horowitz: New York & Italy” will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Room 101 of the F. Ross Jones Building, Mattin Center, on the Homewood campus at 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. Visitor parking on campus is available in the South Garage, 3101 Wyman Park Drive, Baltimore, Md. 21211. Admission is free and open to the public.
While Horowitz’s eye for light and atmosphere connects her plein air canvases with the landscape studies Corot made in the Roman countryside during the 1820s, her New York subject matter – skyscrapers, elevated highways, power plants – grounds her work firmly in the present. And very few painters indeed have been able to capture the luminous, timeless beauty of Tuscany and Umbria the way Horowitz does.
Horowitz has shown her paintings extensively in solo and group exhibitions across the United States and in Europe. Her work can be found in numerous private and public collections, including those of the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the New York Historical Society. Her shows have been favorably reviewed in the New York Times, the New Yorker and New American Painting. She is represented by Hirschl & Adler Modern in New York.
Born and raised in New York City, Horowitz received her BFA from Purchase College, State University of New York, in 1980 and her MFA from Brooklyn College in 1987. Among many awards, she has won two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants and residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell Colony. In 2006, Horowitz was elected a member of the National Academy of Design. She has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tyler School of Art and the Rhode Island School of Design. She currently teaches painting and design and mentors graduate students at Brooklyn College.
